How to Apply
Wondering what the application process for the Civic Digital Fellowship looks like? Our team is here to help. We’ll read over your application, answer questions, and follow up with you every step of the way.
Step 1: Online Application
Rolling admissions until January 9th
Our first step of the application is designed to get to know you better. You’ll submit your resume and share more about your background, including your professional and academic experiences. In addition, short answer questions will give us insights into your interests and why you’re excited by civic technology.
Please note that due to federal hiring regulations, only United States citizens are eligible to apply.
Step 2: Video Interview
Starting January 9th
We’ll review your application, and if we'd like to learn more about you, you’ll have the chance to do a video interview. Conducted by our team members and former fellows, this optional interview is an opportunity to show off your personality and share how you might contribute to our fellowship community. And best of all, this interview requires no technical prep.
Due to the large number of anticipated applicants, we cannot guarantee that everyone will be offered a video interview. This will not be counted against you, and all complete and eligible applications will move on to the next step.
Step 3: Agency Review
Starting February 1st
Your application will be sent to federal agencies looking for students with your background. If they think you could be a fit for one of their projects, they will ask you to participate in an interview via phone or video. Agencies are looking to understand your interest in their work, and how your skill set might apply to their projects. Some agencies may ask you to complete additional interviews or coding challenges with team leads to gauge your fit within the agency — but don’t worry if this doesn’t happen to you.
An agency will reply to you within 2 weeks after your interview to let you know about your application status.
Step 4: Conditional Offer
Starting February 24th
You’re on your way to becoming a fellow! At this point, you’ll be asked by your host agency to complete a thorough background investigation and some other government-required paperwork. This process can take some time on both your end and the agency side, but don’t worry — all of our fellows have been through it.
Step 5: Official Offer
You’ll receive an official offer from your host agency once your paperwork clears. Congratulations, and welcome to the Civic Digital Fellowship! At this point, one of our partners will follow up to confirm your housing, travel, and stipend payments for the summer. Our team will also be in touch to connect you with your fellow cohort members and to start planning summer activities.
